5 Reasons Apollyon Rocked.

So 40 years later I finished reading Apollyon. I know that seems as though the book wasn't amazing. It was. It totally was.

I really need to make sure that responsibilities don't get in the way of reading, because reading-- especially young adult books-- is totally worth it.

                                  So, 5 reasons Apollyon rocked

1) It was written by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

Need I say more? This is the woman who made Aliens seem sexy. I am almost dying for my extraterrestrial experience because of her Lux series. She always does a great job of creating loveable characters and entertaining scenarios that are both out of this world and believable.

2) Alex

That one word sums it all up. Alex is strong, funny and flawed. No Mary Sue here. She is the epitome of a strong female character. We have seen her grow from self centered and rambunctious. To .. well still self-centered and rambunctious, but better at it:) Alex is 100% awesome.

3)Relationships

The relationships in this book really grow. The characters interactions with one another are so much better and stronger. We see the backstory of some relationships that we've wondered about: Alex and her uncle, Alex and Leah, and Aiden and his parents. The development of the back story, really helps to draw the reader into the world and establish and  explain the dynamics.

4) Jennifer is not afraid to kill people

I don't believe in senseless deaths. Not at all, but a war where no one dies isn't really believable. Is it? Not an issue here. Jennifer is not afraid to kill off a character. She is not as extreme as Veronica Roth, but death doesn't phase her.

5) Aiden

Can he get any better? Be still my heart.  If you want to know more about why I love Aiden, you can read my post the hottest males in YA.

Changing the world

Since I was a kid, I have said "I will change the world". I always added that I would do it when I was older, richer, wiser (fill in your own ending). I realize now that day will never come, not just for me, but for any of us. If there is something you want to do you have to do today because tomorrow isn't promised.

So I'm going to change the world.  How am I going to change the world? Honestly, I've been thinking about it.

            1. I can't step in front of a bullet and stop people from shooting police.

            2. I can't control the minds of police officers and stop them from killing unarmed men.

            3. I can't prevent prejudice, oppression, racism, sexism or anti-gay sentiment.

I can, however, promote a better way of thinking. I can promote reading. I know that seems anti-climatic, but I thought about how I could change the world over the break. I thought about how my world changes: it changes through reading. When I read amazing authors like Paula Weston, Rysa Walker and Brigid Kemmerer, I completely detach from this planet.  It's like being in a different world, where my problems are illusions and anything is possible.

I think all too often we turn on the news, read the newspaper, or go online just to find a world of chaos. And for people-- youth especially-- the realities can be daunting. Everyone needs a place of solace: Somewhere they can find refuge in a world at war. For me books are my oasis. And that is one thing that I can share with the world: my love of books.

So I have started a project called 31 books in 31 days to celebrate national reading month. 31 amazing authors donate their books and their time to promote reading. I haven't fine tuned the idea quite yet so I'll keep you all posted- that and quite frankly my hands are tired of typing and I might as well build some suspense. See you next time.

And below is more of the Azemeon. I think I'm going to start compiling it all in one place. For easy access.

Here it is

Chapter 3
“A bomb went off at Lowell high school today. It took the fire department an hour to put out the blaze. Luckily no one was killed in the blast, but several people are in critical condition. Authorities are currently working to find out who is responsible for such a heinous crime. Anderson, back to you.”
Dephon struggled to open his eyes, the throbbing pain in his head encouraged him otherwise. He felt a hand grip his and the pain began to subside. Slowly, he peeked open his eyes and there was Jacqueline and Valentina. Dephon dropped Valentina’s hand and shook his head. This girl was everywhere.
But he couldn’t dwell on her.
“Where’s my mom?”
“She’s just fine. Both of your parents are faring pretty well. Try to stay calm.”
“Calm? How can I stay calm? Everything is a disaster. I’m supposed to be helping, but it looks like I’m in danger of being unborn. How is this happening?”
“When you tamper with time, there are always huge ramifications. Altering just one thing changes the future.”
“Can we stop it?”
“No, but we can try to control it. Maybe you should stay inside for a while, until we can mitigate the effects of you being here.”
“I guess,” Dephon said glumly, “but I’ve got to try to talk to my parents, one last time.”
“I figured you’d say that. I think you’re going to get your wish.” Jacqueline said, turning to look at the door.
Dephon peered over her shoulder and in strolled Singleton with his mother, Joycelyn.  Singleton’s clothes were covered in soot. Smudges were apparent all over his face and his hair was sprinkled with ashes, yet he still looked ready for a model shoot. Some people had all the luck.
“Hello,” Jacqueline said, rising gracefully. She extended a hand to Joycelyn, who stepped forward and shook it firmly. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Joycelyn, Singleton,” she said, shaking his hand as well. “You two must have a lot of questions.”
“You’re an illusionist, among other things,” Joycelyn said, giving Jacqeuline a respectful nod.
Singleton stared at his mother apparently still in shock. “I can’t believe this is happening and that you never told me any of this before I caused an explosion. Illusionists and time travelers,” he said glancing at Dephon. “Is this… can this be real?” he said gesturing at Dephon. “Is this my…” his voice faded like he was incapable of finishing the sentence.
“I believe he is your son and that he has come from the future to warn you. I know it’s hard to handle,” Jacqueline said as Singleton ran his hands through his hair, “but we’re all going to have to work together if we want a better future.”
“I’m not willing to suspend disbelief that much, “Joycelyn said casting a critical stare in Dephon’s direction. Just great, even his grandmother didn’t like him. “Time travelers exist only in fables.”
Valentina stepped in front of him defensively. “He’s telling the truth. I feel it.”

Dephon shook his head as he stared at the ceiling. The one person he didn’t want defending him, was the only person who would. He was going to seem as loony as she was.

A Thousand Pieces of You-Giveaway reminders

Hello all,

As a writer I try not to write bad reviews. I know how much it sucks to receive them. You have slaved away for months, years or decades (if you're that slow, do take up another career) and someone tells you that your book isn't worth the paper it was written on. People are always telling me that I need thicker skin, so I can take the criticism.

They're probably right, but with that in mind, if I can't say something nice about a book, then I won't say anything at all.

This all brings me back to A Thousand Pieces of You. I had read works by the author before and hadn't necessarily been awe inspired, but the premise for this was so interesting I had to read it.

A  Thousand Pieces of You is about the daughter of two physicists who perfect interdimensional travel. The main character, Marguerite, jumps into another dimension to chase after the man who murders her father. Jumping into the next dimension knocks the other version of yourself into a sleeping or cocooned status and the jumper takes control. The book talks about a lot of issues and makes you question the ethics of such possibilities, but the book focuses more on the romance and the mystery than the sci-fi, which is perfectly alright if that's what you're looking for.  the character spends most of her time trying to figure out why her father was murdered and why she has lingering feelings for her father's murderer and his avenger.

Overall I rank the book a B

The characters were likeable enough. They were all flawed enough to be believable, no perfectionism syndrome. Nothing about them made them loveable, but they were interesting enough.

The plot was decent. The character loved her family and she was willing to go to the ends of the earth and beyond to avenge the death of one of their own. It was actually quite touching, the love story was also interesting if not believable. She barely spent any real time with the person she loved in the dimension she was herself in. It, and other factors, made the love story a little hard to believe.

The premise was definitely interesting. I find it an amazing concept. I think it has to be one of the more innovative concepts I have heard all year.

The book is definitely worth a read if you're looking for something off the beaten trail.

Just a friendly reminder, enter the givewaway if you haven't already; it's almost over.

The book you never knew you HAD to read-Haze Review

It has been my experience that the second book in a sequel is the weakest.

I don't know why. It is like the author has used up all their good ideas and is saving the rest for the second book. I can't begin to count how many series ended on the second book for me. Especially now, since my time is precious.

I wasn't expecting much out of sequel to Haze. I just wasn't. I knew it wouldn't be as good as the first book, and I was right. It was better.

The book was funnier, so much funnier. there were so many times that I laughed out loud.

The characters were true to form, they had settled into their characters more. It was eventful, suspenseful, touching, gripping. There aren't enough adjectives in the English language to explain how I feel. I guess I should summarize, but I am still reeling from the amount of awesome squared (math geek, I know) that occurred in this book.

Gabby still has no idea who she is. She knows she is half angel, her brother died a year ago, and that most of her memories are lies. She is still flying blind and her only option is to trust everything that Rafa tells her-and he's not telling her much, because apparently she hated him in the past and that's the last thing he wants her to remember. But she can't focus on their relationship because a new threat is on the horizon that makes it impossible for her to remain complacent. She thought the demons were bad enough, but now theirs a group who can trap her kind making it impossible for them to escape.

This could be deadly to the Rephaim, but every time Gabby tries to get a handle on it the crap hits the fan. Again. And again. And Again. There is literally no downtime in this book. It's like a series of unfortunate events on steroids, but Gabby handles it with a wit that makes this book a must read. If you haven't guessed I loved Haze, I'm excited to read a second in a series that is actually better than the 1st.

Happy Reading

The giveaway just got bigger!

Hello all,

We are still hard at work on our sequel. And by hard at work, I mean staring at the pages and hoping that it edits itself.
We are also developing a winning kickstarter strategy. Our campaign hinges on our loyal followers and their feedback about book one and hopes for book two. So we have decided to up the ante. Earlier, I said we would increase/improve on a giveaway, here it is: originally the winner of the video review would win 50$, now the first place winner will win 100$. Just say why you loved the Exemeus, why their should be a sequel, and why people should donate to the creation of the Azemeon. That's it. All Video's should be submitted to Fmorris(at)folamiandabenimorrisbooks.com by Dec 9, 2014. On december 1st the rafflecopter will go up for anyone who submitted video to enter a giveaway just for participating. It is truly that simple.

Attached is more of the Azemeon. Enjoy.
                      Chapter 2
Dephon tossed and turned in his sleep. His sadness was so heavy it felt like it was pressing down on his chest, making it impossible to breathe. Images of his mother assaulted his mind, the memories of her fighting Dubleton, the shocked expression on her face when she was betrayed. Dephon squeezed his eyes together, trying to keep the errant thoughts at bay… but he couldn’t. His least favorite memory of her came unbidden into his mind: beams of white light uniting and hitting his mother in the heart before she crashed lifeless to the ground.
Dephon sprung up into a seated position, nearly colliding with Jacqueline who was sitting on his bed.
“Uhhh, must you always do that?”
“I don’t know what you mean, but whatever I do, I do for a reason.”
“Could’ve fooled me,” Dephon said, his eyes latching onto a glittering object swinging from her hand. “What’s that?” he asked, jutting out his chin at her balled up fist.
“I noticed you’ve been trying to sleep for the past 12 hours. It’s almost noon and you don’t look like you’ve slept a wink. What’s wrong?” she asked, ignoring his question entirely.
“Maybe I was creeped out by the thought of someone watching me sleep.”
Jacqueline smiled. “You’re amusing.  What’s the real reason that you can’t sleep? Valentina can’t seem to either. She’s tossing and turning too.”
“Do you spy on all of your house guests?”
“Only the ones whose minds I can’t read.”
Dephon nestled back against his pillow, his eyes roaming the ceiling. “What do you think about Valentina?”
“I can’t get any more of a read on her than I’ve got on you.”
“Then why did you let us stay here. We could be murderers, or assassins hired to kill you.”
Jacqueline burst into laughter, a melodious sound that put Dephon at ease.  “I would love to see you two try, but even with the debilitating fear of you slitting my throat while I sleep, I couldn’t turn you out onto the streets. And she seems hell bent on assisting you, so I viewed it as a package deal.”
“We are not a package. I don’t even know her. And “ Dephon added, leaning forward, just in case Valentina had magical hearing powers “she’s a little bit weird.”
“So are you. And you do seem to share a connection. You both suffer from restless sleep syndrome. What’s the problem? Dreaming about Hyalee?”
“Wait, you think I’m weird?”
Jacqueline waved her hand dismissively, the glittering object catching his attention once more.
“What is that?” Dephon asked again.
“An Azemeon.”
“Uh huh, of course. Never a name I know. What’s it for? It looks like a necklace.”
“It is more or less, and it’s for you.”
“A necklace, just what I always wanted. Too bad I forgot to pack anything that will match.”
“I’m sure you’ll manage,” she said as she gingerly placed the necklace around his neck.
“Why do I have to wear this,” Dephon asked reaching up to grab the sphere shaped pendant.
“Don’t touch i-“ Jacqueline’s words were cut off as the world was engulfed with darkness. Dephon felt his insides split into a million pieces swirling around until they all reconfigured in a blinding flash of light.
And then there was no more.
                                                            ***
“Earth to Hyalee,” Virginia said waving her hands in my face. “Have you heard a word I said?”
“No, I’m so sorry,” I said, looki ng over my shoulder, “but I suddenly get the feeling we’re being watched.”
“Maybe the guy I pepper-sprayed is coming back for more,” Virginia said excitedly, beginning to dig through her purse.
“Stop. No more mace. I can’t believe you even did that, he was just a boy.”
“A creepy boy.”
“I thought he looked sweet.”
“We’ll have to agree to disagree. So, as I was saying, I was online and I saw an advertisement for the hobbit and you know who the lead looked like? David! That’s who he looks like, I couldn’t put my finger on it, but he looks like one of the trolls from those movies.”
“They’re not trolls they’re hobbits, hence the name The Hobbit.”
“Whatever, you know what I mean. Ooooohh fine guy, six o’clock.”
I rolled my eyes at Virginia’s short attention span, but I played along with her anyway. “My six or yours?”
“Definitely yours,” a smooth Baritone voice said behind me. I turned around and stared up into the most arresting hazel eyes. Dimples winked at me from his cheeks. I’m pretty sure I had stopped breathing.
“I seem to be lost,” he said staring at me intently, “can you help me find my way to English lit; it’s in room,” he glanced at his schedule, “it’s in room 134. Do you know where that is?”
“She sure does,” Virginia said, volunteering my services.
“I hope I didn’t interrupt your conversation. I’d just hate to be the new kid who was always late.”
I glanced at the clock on my phone, “No, it’s fine. If you hadn’t come by, I would have been late for class. Again.”
“See,” Virginia said offering him her most endearing smile, “you just saved her from detention. Are you trying to be her superman?”
I gave Virginia a warning look as the boy laughed, an interesting sound that complimented the sparkle in his eyes. “I’ll do my best.”
“Well, let’s get going,” I said to him, “I’ll see you later, V,” I called over my shoulder.
“Call me later and tell me everything!”
I wished the floor would swallow me up. “She’s just kidding, really.”
He nodded indifferently, “Best friends don’t scare me. They normally just want to make sure I’m not the antichrist and that I keep them knee deep in swoon-worthy stories. How am I doing so far?”
I laughed, “Well, I don’t think you’re the antichrist.”
“What a relief: that was the part I was most worried about,” he said giving me that 100 watt smile. “So what’s your story?”
“My story?”
“Tell me about yourself. We can start with your name.”
I came to a halt in front of room 134. “There’s not much to tell really,” I said leaning against the wall. Facing me he did the same. He was so close the tips of our shoes were almost touching. I had to crane my neck to see his handsome face. I brushed a stray hair out of my face nervously.
“You don’t have a name? Your mother must have a hard time when she wants to call you for dinner.”
I smiled, “I’m Hyalee Smith, a senior here at Lowell High.” I shrugged unsure of how to proceed.
“Single, dating, married?”
“Married?” I laughed, “If I got married now, my mother would kill me before I even left the church.”
“That would cut costs if you plan your wedding and your funeral on the same day. The same preacher can preside over both ceremonies. I should market that.”
“Weddings and funerals in one, I don’t know if it will catch on.”
“I can sell anything; Evian to a drowning man.” His eyes roved over my face. “You never told me if you were single or not.”
“I’m definitely single,” I said, staring down at the tips of our shoes.
“Maybe we should change that, what are you doing after class?”
The bell rang.
Shoot, I was late again.
“Detention,” I said glumly. I pushed off the wall. “It was nice to meet you….?” I trailed off trying to remember his name, but realizing he had never given it to me.
“Dubleton. Dubleton Johnson.”
“I’ll see you around, Dubleton” I said, dashing down the hall.

I faintly heard him say, “You can count on it.”

Audiobook- Daughter of Smoke and Bone

So recently my amazing coworker took me into the audio room and helped me to figure out the setup for constructing my audio book. The room is just awesome- and scary. I'm afraid that I am going to touch something and cause a blackout throughout city.

Anyway, I'm starting recording for The Exemeus soon and I'll be providing recording for the Azemeon as soon as all of the editing is done. In order to prepare for this daunting task I am listening to audio books that have received glowing praise. First on my list is this book I've always wanted to read, The Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I know I'm late on that one, but better late than never. The summary sounds amazing and the character has blue hair-- just like my character. What could be better? This is my first audio book purchase ever, which makes me sound both old and lame, but I'm  a bit stoked all the same.

Now where am I going to listen to it? That just might be a problem.

Stay tuned, our Saturday morning post announces our first giveaway and says what you'll need to do to cash in on the action. Feel free to leave us comments, share with your friends, or join our blog.

The Past Remembers

For most of my life, my dreams have been fairly useless. Occasionally, I have had a prophetic dream or two, but that is a rarity. My dreams normally come with people randomly shape shifting, or in such a hodgepodge of activity that I am too confused to remember them.

Today, however, I feel like I was given an episode of a TV series. The whole thing with a cast of characters and the pilot episode just dropped in my lap. It could be nothing or it could be everything.

The dream is too lengthy to share, but its about a group of people, two of whom have powers, attending their friends' wedding. One person, however, is beginning to realize that the day has been repeating for sometime now.  Little things he changes doesn't alter the day, but when his friend senses the shift comedy ensues and the entire day goes topsy turvy.

I'm definitely going to flush this out. It just happened, so all of the content is running together in my head. But what I remember was the silly character's last reminder "The Past Remembers".

So how do you get inspiration? Does it appear like Hagrid in the Sorcerer's Stone, a full burst of light from nowhere? Or does it slowly trickle in? However you get it feel free to post it in the comment's section this week. I would love to know what you're working on.

The hottest males in YA

Everyone is always asking me why I love YA. I answer the question all the time, but today I thought I would zoom in on the males in YA.

I love the fact that female heroines are popular, because we get to see the men through their eyes. We get to see the things that they love about their guy and hate about their guy. But most importantly, it keeps us guessing. Does he like her? Does he hate her? Why is he acting like that? It all adds to the suspense. And then theirs the moment we realize that she really does like him, it made (hopefully) all of those pages of angst worthwhile.

But not every YA man is created equal. What I like in a YA hero is different than what you would like. I love my men strong, loyal, and highly sarcastic. I love a sensuality that eases off the pages. So my male crushes would have to be:

1) Ayden from Demons at Deadnight. He is protective. He's hot-- both literally and figuratively.  He's got a sense of humor and he's got a cute way of dealing with Aurora. I love their interactions and how he treats her family. And he's got a body to die for. What more could a ya reader want.

2) Dmitri. Hopefully everyone knows who I'm talking about, from Vampire Academy. Once I got over the slightly pedophilish nature of their relationship, I really loved him. He struggled to do the right thing, like a dieting kid at a pizza party. But even as he waited for her to turn 18, he was protective, he was loyal, and he had his own little sense of humor. Did I mention his Godlike physique?  His body was to die for, I had to keep myself from drooling on the pages. Even when he didn't feel the same about Rose anymore-- at least, so he said-- he was willing to take on an army for her. Swoon.

3) Aiden. I must have a thing for Aidens, because I love the Aiden of Jennifer L Armentrout's half-blood series. I love his loyalty to her and to his beliefs. He is such acharacter of substance, because morals and values are important to him. What I love the most about him is that he is willing to break with the morals and values that he has adhered to all of his life just to keep Alex safe. I love how he looks at her and loves her even when she is "acting up". He is a well written character that I wish I could bring into real life.

Those are my main three for now. I'll be posting my new loves of YA again at the end of March to kick off the promotion of The Azemeon. Whoever posts their favorite ya heros or heroines will be entered to win a prize. Stay tuned.

Audiobook Fears

As a self-published author, creating and publicizing your ya book is not easy.  There are many hats that an author has to wear as a publicist as well as a publisher. It's hard to keep everything straight and make sure that you are focusing on what is most important and not what is the most present.

However, as I focus on the launch of my new book a new avenue has just opened up for me- audiobooks. Apparently there are a religious following of audiobook zealots. These people only "read" audiobooks, but most publishers overlook this market, because, frankly, its quite costly.

I, however, have been offered this amazing opportunity to use a professional sound studio and self create my audio book for free. Its very exciting- and scary. I have done everything I can to create a professional quality book. I always want my name to be synonymous with the perfection that you expect from a top notch publishing company. I have spent years educating myself on how to create a first quality book, but how does one create an audio book? Do I need to create voices?  Can I even keep the voices straight if I did? I am pretty sure that I am paralyzed with fear, but hopefully through research and perseverance I will be able to create a quality product.

So hopefully you guys can tell me what you want in an audio book. What makes an audio book great? What is the ultimate turnoff in audio books? Let me know.

Why is The Exemeus different-Sequel updates

We wrote The Exemeus before the dystopian craze: before every book on the shelf talked about what plague, revolution, or natural disaster had wiped out man kind. We wanted our book to be different. So we gave it two eyes- two perspectives: one of the world the way it was and one of the world the  way it is. In books, and in life, we rarely ever see what in society led up to the moment. What led up to the revolution? What is so important that the character you love, must fear, must fight, must die for the truths of a world that we may or may not believe is possible.

The Exemeus is different. It is the story of how the revolution failed. It is a story of struggle and hope, with a mixture of magic.

The Azemeon is far better than The Exemeus was, luckily. And it deserves far more publicity than the Exemeus received. So we're delaying our release date. In the meantime we'll be conducting giveaways to build up to the big day.

Thanks for being awesome

Dephon wove his way through the crowded streets, his fear propelling him forward. Out of place in this new time, Dephon wasn’t sure of much, but he was sure of one thing:he was being followed.
In the sewers of Trepton, the first thing you learned was how to tell when you weren't alone.  There were no second chances in Trepton, but at least there, he knew who his enemies were. Here he had no idea. And that was much worst. He stopped and hid behind a building at the corner of Kezar Drive, peering cautiously down the street in the hopes of catching his stalker unaware. The streets were brimming with so many people that he couldn’t see anything. Or rather he saw too much. A dark-haired man to the left of him looked suspicious, and a masculine-looking woman was staring at him a little too intently for comfort.  Was she evil, or was she just staring because Dephon just looked crazy, peeking at people around the side of buildings?
Dephon tried to clear his head, but everyone was starting to look suspicious. He could have sworn that he saw the girl in the flowery white and pink dress with long, swinging black hair three streets ago.  And there was a man in a blue suit pushing a stroller who looked familiar, too. Dephon wasn’t sure who was following him, but he was smart enough to never doubt his instincts.

Dating chronicles

Sometimes I am the coolest person on the planet and then there are moment when I'm so socially akward you would think that I had just turned 13.  In these moment of verbal clumsiness the only ways to redeem myself is with one of my many dating stories. People have told me that I should write a book about my dating chronicles, because some of the things that have happened to me have been just so weird they seem like fiction.  Oh, how I wish they were.

A lot of them are a little inappropriate for this audience, but I'm sure I can find a few that can appeal to all audiences, so I thought every now and again I'll share.

I had recently been avoiding dating like the plague. Not just because no one interested me-- although they didn't-- but because the horrors of the last 3 men (frogs) still left a foul taste in my mouth. More on them later. So the only thing that could make me date again was shear necessity.

My last date, if you can even call it that, happened because I had to take my car in for an oil change. And in a rare stroke of anti-luck, everyone I knew who could drive, including my father, was out of town. So I decided to go out with a guy who I had met at the food max in hopes of hitching a ride to my car. To avoid being a total user I indicated that we could go to the movies and I would meet him there.

I texted to say that I was running late, literally, since I was on foot . He said no problem and that he was already there. I arrived and proceeded to look for him. I couldn't find him anywhere. I stood out front. I walked the parking lot. Finally, I took out my dying phone and called him. No answer. I texted and finally he responded with " where are you?"

A little annoyed I texted that I was in front of Deer valley. I assumed he had gone to the wrong movie theater. Deer Valley is the name of  the movie theater by my house. What I should have remembered was it was also the name of the high school.

Ten minutes later, I get a call. "Where are you?" he asks.

More than a bit irritated, I remind him "I am still at the movie theater."

He apologizes saying "I thought you meant the high school."

Does that make any sense? Why would I, a 30 year old woman, be at the high shool on a Sunday?

Ten minutes later he shows up with his shirt un-buttoned, showing his protruding beer belly and no undershirt.

I am leery of getting in the car.

I ponder my options: getting in or walking the 7 miles to Firestone to get my car.

Although the second option was wiser, I thought of Layla, my Infiniti, waiting patiently for me at the Firestone.

With a sigh I get in.

The man, who we will call Gabe, began to talk excitedly. He seemed-- and smelled differently-- it took me a second to place the smell.

"Have you been drinking?" I asked incredulously.

"Yeah, but not too much. Just a beer and a little weed. I take care of my body and I know my limits."

Before I could comment he leaned out the window and yelled at a man leaving Chase bank, "Hey man, you gonna split that with me?"

The man laughed and shook his head.

"Do you know him?" I asked.

"No, I just like messing with people."

Uh huh.

"Where's your car?" He asked me.

"Over at the Firestone on Somersville."

"That far," he asked.

"Yeah?" I was truly confused because Antioch was a small city. If you blink you will miss it. And Firestone was just one exit over. It was close enough that walking had been an option.

I glanced over at him. He was looking at his gas tank. The gas tank light was on. We were lucky the car was even moving.

I realized something more was wrong then just the inconvenience of stopping for gas.

"Do you need money?" I supplied.

"I don't need for anything, but the car does."

I was confused did that mean he needed money or he didn't?

We entered a gas station and he started yelling out the window to some guy.

Another stranger he was messing with?

"How's it going?" Gabe yelled

"Good, I got a job. But I got to take a drug test."

" What are you on?"

"Weed and a little methoxy."

Gabe went on to chastise the man for using meth and how weed was fine, but not meth.

I found the hypocrisy to be irritating.

We pulled up to the pump and Gabe fiddled around for a while. I realized he definitely needed gas money. I pulled out a twenty.

"I don't need that much. I'll bring you back a ten. I'm not that type of guy. You'll see who you're dealing with."  He said taking the twenty from me.

I really wasn't sure the type of man he was trying to distinguish himself from, but I don't think he was successful.

When he came out of the gas station. He ran into yet another friend. this man followed him back to the car, discussing the virtues of Gabe's intellect. Apparently, no one had ever broken things down to him in the way Gabe had. He droned on about how he would always go with them on Sundays. He spoke to Gabe like he was  a God, I looked over Gabe's shoulder to see if the man was possibly talking about someone behind Gabe.

He wasn't.

Gabe got back into the car. "He's homeless," he explained to me. "Every time I see him, I pick him up and will take him to In Shape for a shower or something. Today I took him to the marina. On Sundays preachers preach outside so we can hear the word, smoke a little weed and just get uplifted.

Hmmm. I wasn't sure how to take that.

Review of Shadows

Most people know how much I love Angelfall. However, most other angel books have not compared. I can pass on most of the angel series, so I was reluctant to read Shadows by Paula Weston, but the name kept popping up. I'm a believer in fate and destiny (on a good day anyway) so I ordered the book and started reading. In the neginning, I was far from interested. I wasn't exactly bored, but there was very little reason to keep reading. And then in stepped Rafa. the book quickly became interesting-seizing my attention. Everything took off from there.

I'm normally farily good at reading the signs. Most authors put enough writing on the wall so that there are no surprises. Not the case here. There were so many times that I was just shocked. The secondary characters all had their own motives and they kept derailing the story -- in a good way. No one was what they seemed. The main character even kept you off your toes, but she was always loyal, funny and true to herself- whoever herself managed to be. You want a funny story that keeps you on your toes? This is the story for you.

Eradicated

Newest addition to our story line:

In 2223 A.D. humanity realized they were not alone. An alien group from the planet Gliese 581-d came to Earth to escape the destruction of their home planet. Earth's leaders allowed it because the aliens were peaceful, they were beautiful, and something about them was utterly irresistible.

400 years later humanity has all but been eradicated. Most humans have been absorbed into the alien population. Maya Richardson is one of the few thousand remaining humans. She lives in a fledgling where she had lived with both of her parents, until they each disappeared, abandoning her to for the glittering allure of the Gliesian society.

Unfortunately, she is branded a traitor when her best friend vanishes with the commune’s money. Maya has to prove her innocence to take her rightful place in the commune hierarchy.

But Maya has a secret. Actually, she has two secrets: one that can save the commune and the other that can save humanity. Unfortunately, exposing one of her secrets will get her kicked out of the commune. If she exposes the other, she'll find out that the aliens aren’t so peaceful after all.

Why I love Singleton Johnson

Why I love Singleton Johnson

I was born in America, but I feel like I was born in the old America. An America where loyalty meant something, where people chose to stay married instead of getting divorced, where your friends were there for you no matter what and where something as small as an election didn't diminish your love for this country.

Maybe, I used to suffer from a bit of naivete. My friends have always told me I was sheltered, but I don't think that's it. I think our loyalty has plummented. It is easier to get a new model of anything then it is to fix the model that we have.

That's why we created Singleton the way that we did. He is all the things a female could want in a man: smart, funny, but most importantly loyal. He's there for the sake of being there. You can rely on him until the end, to be supportive, to be protective, and most importanly to be the loving guy you can depend on. The characters in the sequel, The Azemeon, are a little different. Life lessons have made them change a bit, but they are all still the same characters that you remember. I hope you continue to love them as much as we do.
